Rural Mental Health Year 4 Grant Approval- Media Release
The Hinton Rural Mental Health Action Team is excited to announce the recent grant funding approval for their fourth year, totaling $12,700.
This funding has allowed the Action Team to secure a guest speaker, inspire community conversations about youth and men’s mental health, and the importance of reaching out for support.
Hinton welcomes Tyler Smith, former Humboldt Broncos hockey player and Amazing Race Canada winner, on Tuesday, September 17th, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Performing Arts Theatre. As a survivor of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, Tyler brings awareness and advocacy about mental wellness and shares lessons learned from his journey to create safe spaces for open conversation surrounding mental health, PTSD and trauma. ‘Your story can be the spotlight at the end of other people's tunnels’ - Tyler Smith.
Men are three times more likely than women, to die by suicide. (source: Health Canada, 2024) While awareness about men’s mental health has improved over recent decades, many continue to carry their mental health burdens without help. We can do better. Increasing awareness and starting honest conversations are key steps to support men feeling stressed, anxious or depressed. Let’s break down the barriers that prevent men from seeking help.
Hinton’s Rural Mental Health Action Team encourages our community to talk about men’s mental health. The ‘Buddy Up’ campaign is a great place to start and is a campaign we can all participate in year-round. You can find more information on the ‘Buddy Up’ campaign here: https://www.buddyup.ca/
Additionally, Hinton Offers Wellness shares resources for men’s mental health.
The Rural Mental Health Project is a partnership between the Canadian Mental Health Association and rural communities throughout Alberta. Its goal is to strengthen the mental well-being of rural communities across Alberta with strength-based projects designed for our unique communities by local action teams, with the support of a provincial network.
