National Drowning Prevention Week: July 16 - 22

July 21, 2023

Open Water Safety:

We're back with more essential water safety tips as part of National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW)! Let's work together to prevent drownings and promote a safer aquatic environment.

Stay Safe in Open Water

  • Did you know that around 70% of all fatal drownings in Canada occur in open water such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and ditches? Open water swimming is different from pools, so it's crucial to know your limits and check local conditions before taking the plunge. Safety comes first!
  • Always supervise children near open water, and remember: if you're not within arms' reach, you've gone too far!
  • Never swim alone; always bring a buddy to enjoy the water safely together.
  • When possible, choose supervised open water areas for swimming and avoid using boats, inflatables, or kayaks alone. Safety in numbers is the way to go!

Be Prepared for Water Adventures

  • Before you go, check the weather and water conditions. Knowing what's below is essential – always go in feet first the first time to avoid hazards.
  • Protect your neck and never dive into shallow water. Be aware that open water may have currents or waves that can be dangerous. Learning local conditions is vital before entering.
  • In open water, you could be swept out past safety. Limit the use of inflatables and pool toys, especially in windy conditions. Remember, always wear a lifejacket on board. Safety starts with smart choices!

Join us for exciting activities:

  • Bring a Buddy Day - 2 for the Price of 1!
  • Buddy Relay Races: Compete with your buddies in thrilling relay races at the pool.
  • Open Water Safety Scavenger Hunt: Test your knowledge and find hidden clues for water safety awareness.
  • Currents and Rough Water WaterSmart Activities: Learn valuable skills to navigate currents and rough waters with confidence.

Let's make water safety a fun and educational experience! Together, we can prevent drownings and ensure a memorable summer filled with safe aquatic adventures.
