Citizens' Minute with Council

Residents are welcome to speak to Council about issues, events, celebrations or concerns during Minute with Council. At the beginning of each regular Council Meeting, Mayor Mackin opens the floor to the public to speak and share with Council members, administration and meeting observers.

Mayor Mackin presented two awards to Town of Hinton admin staff. Hans Van Klaveren received the William Metcalf Award, for demonstrated excellence in recreation management.

The Town of Hinton's 2015 website refresh received the Digital Communications Award of Excellence from the Edmonton Chapter of International Association of Business Communicators. Emily Olsen accepted the award on behalf of the website refresh team.

Progress Update on Elder Abuse Prevention Initiative - Presented by Charlene Sitar
Charlene provided an update on the initiative and their commitment as a network to provide information to and empower those in abusive situations to move forward. She asked Council to consider a proclamation for June 15 to be known as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Council put a motion forward to request that proclamation at the next Council meeting.  

Update on Forest Heights Resident / Developer Discussions - Garth Griffiths and Brent Tkachuk
Brent and Garth shared an update on their discussion regarding the purchase and development by Griffiths Ford of 110 Forest Heights Drive, and residents' concerns. Residents of Forest Heights were given a tour of the lot and information on the development, including proposed improvements to Forest Heights Dr., and a commitment to limit tree removal was expressed. 

Action Items


1. Proposed Municipal Reserve Disposal - Presented by Mindi Petkau 15 - 22
Council voted to direct admin to commence the municipal reserve disposal process from 110 Forest Heights Drive. Next steps will be a public hearing, then 2nd, 3rd and final reading. 

2. Municipal Development Plan #940-11 and Land Use Bylaw Amendment #960-54 (Procedural Requirements in Support of Action Item #1) - Presented by Lorraine Walker 23 - 30
Council gave First Reading to Municipal Development Plan Amendment #940 - 11.
Council also gave First Reading to Land Use Bylaw Amendment #960 - 54
 
3. Gateway Signage - Presented by Mindi Petkau 
Council approved the installation of LED strip lighting and. Landscaping of crushed rock and small boulders for a capital project cost of $35,000

Council voted to approve that the Gateway Signage capital project be funded from the Parks Reserve. 

4. Library Financial Statements - Presented by Sheila McKeand
Council approved SHeila McKeand, MBA, CPA, CMA to prepare and sign off on the Library Financial Statements to be presented to the Alberta Government for their grant request. 


Information Items


Senior's Lifetime Acheivement Awards were given out this week to a crowd of 235 people. Ginny Blair was this year's recipient. 

Roadwork on Highway 16 - The Town CAO, Mike Scwirtz has been relaying feedback to Alberta Transportation and will look into transitions to milled portions of the roadway.

Repellent bags for mountain pine beetle - Rob has looked into where they might be purchased, and will circulate further details. 

Town of Hinton Newsflash


The Town of Hinton wishes to advise that TELUS Fibre will be continuing with their fibre optic installations over the next few weeks for residential and commercial properties.

During this time you may have a TELUS representative visit you to see if you want to be connected to the fibre optic network.  Please note that the service connection may have an impact to your landscaping. Feel welcome to talk directly to the representative about this to understand where and how they will be installing the line.
