Bursary Awarded to Youth Councillor
November 17, 2022
The Town of Hinton was thrilled to present Joehn Torres with a $500 bursary for fulfilling his commitment to the Hinton Youth Advisory Council (HYAC) while he pursues further education.
Mayor Marcel Michaels, Councillor JoAnn Race, and Councillor Brian LaBerge, as well as HYAC administrative members, were happy to present Councillor Joehn with this bursary to recognize his outstanding dedication to the youth council and promoting volunteerism within our community.
Joehn joined HYAC for the 2021-2022 term year and excelled at volunteer hours, participating in the project, and being a fantastic representative within the school as well as the community at large. During his term, Joehn volunteered for at least eight hours, more than the six required to fulfil his HYAC commitment. His volunteering endeavours included Wild Mountain Music Festival and the Northern Rockies Museum.
Now, Joehn is heading off to university to study for a bachelor’s degree in Commerce. He hopes to return to Hinton as a Municipal Intern.
“Congratulations to Councillor Joehn. We wish you all the best in your further education, and we know that you will do amazing things,” said Torrie Gunia, Family and Community Support Services Assistant Manager and Administrative Member of HYAC. “Also, a sincere thank you to Mayor Michaels, Councillor Race and Councillor LaBerge for attending.”
Hinton Youth Advisory Council operates through a partnership between the Town of Hinton and the Northern Rockies Museum of Culture and Heritage with the purpose of engaging youth by providing them with mentorship opportunities and a platform to provide input into municipal processes.
The Council is comprised of up to eight students from grades 8-12. Youth can volunteer or be nominated for yearly terms, and each successful term earns the youth councillor $500 to help pay for further education after graduation.
There are two remaining seats for the 2022-2023 HYAC term. If you are interested in learning more, visit www.hinton.ca/hyac or contact James at the Hinton Youth Centre at jeveritt@hinton.ca or 780-865-6029.
