[ARCHIVED] Early Spring Delivers Bumper Crop of Beautiful Bright Blossoms!

Dandelions are out in full force this spring in Hinton, to the delight of some and the chagrin of others. The Town of Hinton is not spraying our common green spaces this year, in a pilot project to assess the value of our past pesticide program. The Town will be mowing regularly and monitoring, and mowing down any dandelion outbreaks that become “unsightly”.

Dandelion FAQ:

  • Hinton has traditionally only sprayed pesticide in the Fall.
  • Dandelions are not considered noxious weeds in Hinton or provincially, and there are no specific prohibitions against having dandelions in your yard.
  • Dandelions, when grown chemical- and pesticide-free, and prepared correctly, can be eaten and can be very tasty.Dandelions are a perennial concern in many municipalities each year, but to date there has been no “magic bullet” solution to the “aesthetics vs. toxic pesticide” debate.

Any concerns/comments/compliments can be sent to Mona Hegion, at mhegion@hinton.ca or by calling 780-865-2634 and she will add your feedback to the pilot project review to occur this fall.
